WORK/ PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

In May 2024, photographer Roman Mashevskiy set off to Japan with a camera, a dozen rolls of film, and just as many P.Y.E glasses. Promising to return with portraits of Tokyo’s citizens, he brought back not only striking images but also a tansu chest full of stories. The editorial design reflects this thoughtful narrative. A restrained, graphic approach inspired by Japanese bamboo constructions creates a harmonious frame for the photos and texts. Yet, to balance this calm structure, vertical lines of typography inspired by Japanese writing—reminiscent of Tokyo’s street signs—introduce a hint of chaos and vibrancy, echoing the city’s unique rhythm.
